Driving Test Information and Tips For Your Driving Test
To help you prepare for your driving test you should be aware of the following information. However, the information should not be seen as exhaustive. It is purely intended to provide general information regarding what occurs during the driving test.
The morning of your driving test some tips for success
- Make sure your car is in a roadworthy condition, you will fail your test if it is not.
- Make sure you have your L plates correctly displayed on your car.
- Make sure that all appropriate disks such as NCT, Tax and Insurance are correctly displayed and up to date.
- Show up 20 minutes before your test to park your car, reversing into the bay will mean an easier start to your test.
- Bring your provisional licence and the letter you received from the Department of the Environment and Local Government.
Your Driving Test: What Will Happen During The Test
The driving test is straightforward. For cars it will last about 40 minutes and will include:
- Questions on the Rules of the Road (including identifying road signs); demonstrating hand signals.
- Reversing round a corner.
- A turnabout (three point turn) in the road.
- A hill start.
- Driving approximately five miles under a variety of road and traffic conditions.
- Road positioning.
- Overtaking and passing.
- Anticipation and observation.
- Use of mirrors and signals.
- Maintaining Progress and Speed.
- Compliance with traffic lights, road signs and markings.
- Use of the vehicle controls (accelerator, clutch, gears, brakes and steering).
- Use of secondary controls such as wipers, demisters, etc.
